Airport in Mumbai |

|
Mumbai, known as Bombay not too long ago, is the capital city of the Indian State of Maharashtra. It is one of the most populous cities in the world and the largest metropolis in India. The population is estimated to be more than 19 million by next year. Mumbai is actually formed by the archipelago of seven islands and is one of the most important commercial hubs in the country. The main factor leading to its importance is because of the opening of the Swiss Cannel in 1869. This made Mumbai the largest seaport on the Arabian Sea and the city grew continuously ever since shipping over 50 % of the country’s passenger traffic.
Apart from the airports in Mumbai, the railway system is the next most vital connectivity to Mumbai within the country. The Central Railway is headquartered at Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus and the Western Railway headquartered near the Churchgate.
Enhancements in the airport in Mumbai aviation facilities are a major concern, which is being seriously worked upon by the Government. The existing infrastructure is already over burdened and the runways are getting damaged alarmingly due to excessive use and less maintenance time. The existing Sahar International Airport & Santacruz Domestic Airport has been renamed the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport.

This airport in Mumbai is one of the busiest airports in the world. It is already handling more than 25% of the domestic traffic and 38 % of the international traffic of the country.
CIDCO or ‘City and Industrial Development Corporation’ is already developing a new airport in Mumbai. This new airport in Mumbai will be known as the Navi Mumbai International Airport and will have state-of-the-art facilities to accommodate large aircrafts and higher traffic flow. The plan is already passed and the project is in the ‘Greenfield’ state.
