Navi Mumbai International Airport

The Navi Mumbai International Airport is a new airport, which is still under construction. This airport is located in the Kopra-Panvel area and is built through a public-private partnership. This means that private firms hold 74% equity while the Government of Maharashtra and the Airports Authority of India holds 13 % each. The City and Industrial Development Corporation or CIDCO represents the Government of Maharashtra.

The land area, which is being developed, is about 11.4 km sq and this will be used for the Navi Mumbai International Airport’s core activities. Two parallel runways will be built for this new airport. The area is located on highway 48 near Panvel and will be about 35 km from the existing Sahar International Airport of Mumbai. The International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) has approved the technical feasibility plan.

The Navi Mumbai International Airport is expected to handle 50 to 55 million passengers a year. The cargo area is designed to have an area of 100,000 meter square while the terminal area will be 250,000 meter square. The total project is estimated to be around Rs. 3,200 crore to Rs. 4,000 crore.

The Navi Mumbai International Airport has been chosen to offload the existing over burdened Mumbai airport. The location, which is chosen, is expected to grow rapidly and become an expansion of the business and commercial activity of Mumbai. This Navi Mumbai International Airport will be able to accommodate the new larger aircrafts compatible to aerodrome code 4-E.

Although the need for International Airport in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region is very high, the CIDCO has not yet completed land acquisitions of all the required village areas. There are also other factors involving the delay of the project like the environmental problems. Mangroves and problems related to storm water drain in Panvel are some of the natural factors adding to the delay.
